Waiting for the green light

(For Greek and French scroll down)

In the amateur theatre labs where I have worked from time to time, there is a pattern somewhat repetitive. A behavior, almost a tick, which can come from any participant: deeply motivated or indifferent, energetic or reserved. This behavior has nothing to do with the participants' educational, economic, or social level.

When this tick occurs, it dissolves any concentration, any teamwork, any moment of coordination or inspiration achieved at that time by the participants.

It blocks the flow, the instinctive spontaneity, the connection of the "guilty" with their emotions, as well as their connection with the group. It restricts their imagination and creativity, though at first it gives the impression of achieving the exact opposite.

Of course, the word "guilty" is an exaggeration, as we’re talking about a normal, human process. In all honesty, I can say that in the theatre companies I have worked as an actor, it is often me the one carrying  this "childhood illness" - maybe that's why I easily recognize it when I come across it, and I understand how much harm it can do.

What is this behavior?

The comment.

The need for comment.

Comment on everything.

On everything that happens during class, from our rehearsal clothes and the exercises we do, to improvisations and scenes.

But also on everything that goes on out of class - late buses, hard-to-find parking spots, professional concerns. Information coming and exploding like small bombs of tension and dispersion at any time, even during rehearsal.

My reaction to all this varies. Initially, I was responding to any comment by another one, maybe out of a need to win the group, especially if the group was new. Later, I just asked them politely not to comment so as not to destroy what was being created between the more concentrated participants. Lately, I prefer, as far as possible, to just continue my work, trying to reinforce what is happening on stage so as to help it overcoming the "attack" of the comment virus. (See what I did there?)

Recently I started telling the workshops’ participants this:

During these few moments that we spend together, allow yourself, to have no need to comment. No need to say something clever. No need to take a distance from what’s going on in order to express an opinion. Enter the event and observe it from the inside. Relax your mind from the constant pressure to make the fastest, the smartest, the most accomplished, the most successful, the funniest, the most subversive comment. Allow your mind to be silent for a while.

Be silent for a while.

Just listen and act.

The problem is that if we pause for a while, if we do nothing, we feel embarrassed.

Here we are.

The comments intend to kill this very embarrassment. To save us from it.

This period of quarantine we live in, reminds me of the moments I drive in the city and suddenly I have to stop before a red light. I have fifteen seconds of waiting. Dead time. Embarrassed. I usually turn on my cellphone in those fifteen seconds in order to kill this embarrassment. Because I can't stand it. Right there, before the red light, in those fifteen seconds of dead time that we DO NOTHING, that our frenzied pace has been paused, it’s possible that we just crumble and burst into tears. In an ordinary day. Because we do not control what is born of this embarrassment. Although it is something born inside us.

But in the theater, we want to see what will be born of this embarrassment, of this dead time.

We want to see things coming up, things we have not foreseen.

What does this have to do with what we are living now and quarantine diaries?

I feel that it's a very noisy quarantine, full of comments, full of words.

Words that serve to hide, not to reveal.

A quarantine with a great need to prove that we exist as artists and not only. A great need to show the whole world how we go about indoors, a great need to show that we are needed, that our creative appetite has not stopped, that we still deserve to exist even while theaters are closed, that we must not be forgotten, a great need to convince that this time is not useless for us, but we continue to produce masterpieces for viewers. Any viewers. The televiewers. Wherever they are, and by whatever means we can reach them.

A great need to make noise.

Maybe because silence has something frightening, or just something unfamiliar.

But it’s ok.

I want to see where this fear will take us.

I work in performing arts and my work, by definition, has a lot of contact, a lot of communication, a lot of extroversion. And this extroversion often becomes just fuss, noise and scattering.

It’s about time to pick up my pieces, take a moment to look and listen to what's going on.

What's happening outside and inside me.

Without comments.

It’s time to enjoy this luxury of quiet time.

It's quiet, not dead.

The time it takes to rest, empty, digest, transform, and re-enter the creative process when the time comes. This time is needed.

To enjoy even the time to work now on myself.

This is probably an artist's most fundamental tool.

Let us clear our eyes, our ears, our minds in order to better receive and understand the new world we will encounter when this quarantine is over. In order to be able to act within it, too.

Because it seems that it's going to be quite a different one.

And in this different world, we will definitely need something even more perceptive and strong than mere comments, to get by as human beings, and be really creative as artists.

Ποια είναι αυτή η συμπεριφορά;

(See what I did there?)

In an ordinary day.

Τι σχέση έχει αυτό με αυτό που ζούμε τώρα και με τα ημερολόγια καραντίνας;

(See what I did there ?)
